WHY WE DO IT
It is critical to “break the norm.”
Only 4% of 8th grade student are reading at the “advanced” level in America.
Only 31% of students are reading at a level deemed “proficient” for a 21st century career.
This mean 65% of students are reading at levels deemed basic, below-basic, or chronically-below-basic.
20,000,000 children are on the brink of educational failure today.
Can we afford a generation where 7 out of 10 young people lack the skills needed to support themselves? Can we afford to steal the futures of more than 15 million teenagers who have dropped out of school since 2000? Can we afford the growing prison populations of functionally illiteracy inmates?
Social injustice? We can and must reverse this condition. We know how to do it and we must.
Literate Nation is a knowledge and support organization. We have the capacity for a systemic, coordinated, and sustained initiative on solving the most critical educational problem facing our schools today—students without the literacy skills to graduate, unprepared to function in the 21st century economy.
