Literate Nation— Fueling students’ literacy success!
The value of literacy—the personal value, the economic value, the social value remains unsurpassed, generation after generation. “Reading literacy” is the one “hard” skill that must be acquired early in a child’s academic career in order for them to become literate in other subjects. Long-term trends of increasing literacy demands will continue and, yet, we have a serious literacy gap among students today. Unless we address this discrepancy head on, half of our young people will not have the skills they need to achieve and compete in the global workforce. They will not have the opportunities that most often translate into better skills, better jobs, better lives, and so on.
WHAT WE DO
At Literate Nation we deliver high-impact knowledge, advice, expertise, and tools to parents, teachers, and citizens to rally around powerful literacy solutions for all children. We design easy-to-understand literacy solutions that can be used, at all levels of education—pre-kindergarten to higher education. We empower the invaluable energy of people’s positive human spirit to guide students to understand that their education today is their lifestyle tomorrow. We manage and execute innovative literacy projects that no one else would even attempt. We believe in the priceless value of every single student, regardless of zip code—no exceptions, no excuses. We connect people with like-minded education stakeholders to push for results and engage authentic, sustainable, science-based school supports. We understand that the “hard” skill of literacy develops into important “soft” skills—like teamwork, communication, negotiation—that play out very strongly in real world success.
WHY WE DO IT
It is a fact that in today’s classrooms, literacy rates are seriously lagging behind “demand” for more than 60% of 8th grade students. These students read and write at a “basic,” “below-basic” or “chronically below-basic” grade level. In essence, U.S. student literacy abilities have come to a halt at a time when rapid, digital information “demands” higher reading, writing and thinking skill. The bottom line is that underperformance in literacy compromises lifelong learning, which is a necessity in today’s rapidly changing workforce.
Compared to our international counterparts, U.S. student scores rank in the bottom half of required literacies—reading literacy, math literacy and science literacy. Extending across socioeconomic spectrums, literacy failure is costing millions of children their future, and it is costing our country trillions of dollars in lost productivity. Frankly, we view this as social injustice for our children and for our citizens’ future.
If the U.S. is to continue to be the example of liberty, opportunity and freedom in the world, the first thing that must change—in every classroom in every state in this country—is student literacy outcomes. Plain and simple, literacy is the primary foundation for education and economic amplification.
