Carolyn D. Cowen
Vice President Media
Most recently, she was Executive Director of Carroll School’s Center for Innovative Education, where she oversaw various outreach and professional-development programs, convened the Dyslexia Leadership Summit, and spearheaded the Dyslexia Geno-Phenotyping Initiative. Prior to that, she was Executive Director of The Learning Disabilities Network—a nonprofit she co-founded and operated for 20 years that provided services to individuals with LD, their families, and professionals working on their behalf.
In her 35-year career in education and nonprofits, Carolyn has worn many hats, including: teacher, reading therapist, speaker, author, editor, consultant, professional-development planner, executive director, think-tank convener, fundraiser, funder, and research coordinator. Carolyn earned her master’s degree in reading education and learning disabilities from Harvard University (during the Jeanne Chall era). She received the Alice H. Garside Award from the New England Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and chaired IDA’s nominating committee. She also serves as a founding member on the Literate Nation Board of Directors. These days, she is especially interested in new-media/print literacy intersections, social media as a tool for driving change, and creative ways nonprofits can ”power the mission with the message.”

Posie Boggs is an active advocate for educating students, parents, educators, and policy makers on the necessity of improving literacy in our nation and the world. She has emphasized that providing comprehensive research-based literacy education early to all our students and adults who struggle with literacy is essential to increasing our nation’s educational outcomes. Equally important is providing educators extensive, rigorous, and multidisciplinary training in the knowledge and practice of teaching the “3 Rs.” As founding president of the Alaska Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, she uses every opportunity available to communicate that research about dyslexia provides a critical base of knowledge that contributes to all aspects of literacy acquisition and instruction. Collaboration beyond silos led her to join Literate Nation.
As an innovator, tutor, and entrepreneur, she is committed to the use of quantitative measurements of progress at every level of instruction.
In over 20 years as a tutor, she has guided numerous parents in their journey to find educational success for their children. She brings a unique perspective to the field, frequently using her Bachelors of Arts in Nursing Science to help parents navigate medical issues such as ADD, ADHD, and epilepsy that influence the educational life of students who struggle with learning. As evidence of her personal commitment and belief in lifelong learning, she has completed her Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) in Educational Diagnostics.
As an advocate, she is committed to the imperative that recent improvements in education, such as Response to Intervention, highly qualified teachers of reading, and policy decisions about literacy instruction based on consensus research be implemented with fidelity and transparent compliance.
Together we can reveal the invisible child and restore the illiterate adult… the ones who no one knows cannot read… the child or adult who lives a voided and canceled life because of illiteracy. We can bring that person into a life of passion, meaning, literacy, active citizenship, and global community. We do not have to waste their human capital with illiteracy.
The advocate, that is where it starts – with one person. The start of the flood begins with the first drop; we have to assist with the droplets, streams, tributaries, until the flood of knowledge and change becomes a reality.
Her adopted motto is: “Never Give Up, Never Surrender” Galaxy Quest
